Mountain Zebra National Park is located in South Africa's Eastern Cape province and was established for the purpose of preserving the endangered Cape Mountain Zebras.

In the decades leading up to the 1930s, the mountain zebras were heavily hunted and at risk of extinction. This led to the formation of Mountain Zebra National Park, in 1937, to provide protection for the zebras.

The main highlight of visiting Mountain Zebra National Park is the zebras for which it is named as well as other animals, and bird species. Some of the popular animals include buffaloes, rhinos, elands, cheetahs, and lions among others.

Mountain Zebra National Park can however be visited all throughout the year. The winter months of June, July, and August are very cold due to the high altitude of the park. The park has fewer visitors and you won't feel crowded whatever time you choose to visit.

Getting There

Mountain Zebra National Park can easily be reached by road using the Highway that connects the nearby town of Cradock to other Major South African cities and towns.

The drive to Cradock takes around 9 hours from the Major airports of Cape Town and Johannesburg. To reduce the drive time, you can take a domestic flight to Port Elizabeth or Bloemfontein where your drive time comes down to between 3 and four hours.

Another great alternative is making a road trip of the whole journey and visiting some hot spots and small towns along the way to Mountain Zebra National Park.
