Gombe Stream National Park, Tanzania

Gombe Stream is located in Western Tanzania, on the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika. The park is well known as the location where Jane Goodall's behavioural research on chimpanzees started.

This makes Gombe a very popular park for conservationists as well as primatologists.

The steep slopes and forest vegetation make an ideal home for chimps, other monkey species, birds, and a great diversity of flora. The steep slopes and river valleys make access only by boat and foot.

When To Visit

Gombe Strem National Park can be visited all throughout the year but the best time is during the dry season months between July and October. This is when you can easily find chimps in the lower slopes of the park.

The wet season is also ideal especially for bird watching, as many migratory birds fly in for breeding.The wet season happens in the months of February through June as well as November and December.

Getting There

Gombe National Park is located 16 kilometres north of Kigoma city in Tanzania's western region. Kigoma can easily be accessed by a local flight from Arusha or Dar es Salaam.

Kigoma can also be easily accessed from Burundi since it is near Tanzania's border with Burundi.
